DAY 1: PUERTO MALDONADO – REFUGIO AMAZONAS
Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco, we will welcome you at the airport and drive you to the Puerto Maldonado headquarters of Refugio Amazonas. You will be asked to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days, and leave the rest at the safe deposit, as it keeps the boats and cargo light. Skirting Puerto Maldonado, we will drive 20 kilometres to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. Here we will board the boat that will take us closer to Refugio Amazonas in a two and a half hours ride surrounded by breath taking views. Once at Refugio Amazonas, we will enjoy a light lunch box while the lodge manager welcomes us and briefs us with important tips for a safe and delightful stay. After dinner, we will go out by the river’s edge at night, scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes that are active at that time. Overnight at Refugio Amazonas.
DAY 2: REFUGIO AMAZONAS
After breakfast we will paddle around the lake on a canoe or a catamaran, looking for lakeside wildlife. We may find hoatzins, caimans and horned screamers, and maybe a few otters, not frequently seen in the area. The colourful and noisy macaws will remind us about of marvels and beauty of nature. Later, we will replicate the daily work of macaw researchers and climb with a rope and harness a 30 metres tree to have a privileged view of the forest. This exercise is demanding but perfectly safe and does not require previous experience, so do not be afraid and try it, it is worth it! After a delicious meal, we will make a few minutes hike from the lodge to a beautiful old growth patch of Brazil Nuts forest that has been harvested for decades. We will learn about the whole process of the rainforest’s only sustainably harvested product from collection through transportation to drying. We will continue our adventure with a walk from Refugio Amazonas to the 25 metres scaffolding canopy tower and the platforms above, to enjoy some birdwatching at the perfect time, one of the most active hours of the day for wildlife in general. We will be able to see toucans, macaws and raptors among others, certainly an impressive show. After dinner, we will make a night walk to see some mammals and frogs of peculiar shapes and sounds, an incredible hike indeed. Overnight at Refugio Amazonas.
DAY 3: CLAY LICKS OF WILDLIFE
After breakfast we will head for a fantastic clay lick used by parrots and parakeets. From a hidden spot we will be able to watch these colourful and loud birds, a one of a kind spectacle. At about twenty minutes walking from the lodge we can find a peccary clay lick. These wild rainforest pigs show up in herds from five to twenty individuals to eat clay in the late morning. Although the chances of spotting them are around 15%, the hike is well worth the effort, as usually other wildlife species show up, and it is a beautiful and low demanding trail. After lunch we will have a great activity, as we will have the chance to go kayaking, paddling up a safe portion of the Tambopata River. At the shores, where fragmented forest can be found, we may see birds, caimans and turtles in an experience that will appeal to all your senses. To finish our excursion, we will stop on a sandy beach to take a well-deserved bath. No previous experience is required, only swimming knowledge. After dinner, we will have some awesome lectures prepared by the staff of Refugio Amazonas about conservation threats, opportunities and projects in the Tambopata National Reserve, and more. Overnight at Refugio Amazonas.
DAY 4: REFUGIO AMAZONAS – TAMBOPATA – PUERTO MALDONADO
After breakfast we will head back to Puerto Maldonado, first by boat and then by land to the offices of Refugio Amazonas in the city, to pick up anything you had left there and go to the airport to take the flight for your next destination.
